Blairgowrie
Berries & Cherries

The tartan tartan wAshleigh in registering the new tartan. Together they’ve named it ‘Blairgowrie Berries and Cherries’ and hope it will become a useful design to promote the town. “Ashleigh’s choice of colours in the tartan was exactly right for the fruits that we grow – wonderful cherry as the background and blueberries to the fore with the traditional raspberries and strawberries running through – I placed an order for a scarf straight away!” said Melanie. “I’m hoping it can be used for a range of items such as handbags, table runners, kilts etc. and am keen to hear from anyone who is interested in using it.” warpweftweave studio is hoping smaller and larger companies will follow suit and take the chance to obtain a new tartan registered for their business. The boost to a company for a corporate tartan goes beyond the cloth and design - it gives a chance for businesses to set a new identity, stand out from the crowd and promote Scottishness.

The Eternal 'Ericht'

This tartan was designed by the pupils of Blairgowrie High School to tell the story of the River Ericht (Abhainn Eireachd) and its importance to the communities of Blairgowrie, Rattray and nearby villages. The river used to be diverted for water wheels which powered local weaving mills. As the industry declined many mills were lost. A few, such as Bramblebank and Keathbank Mill, have been converted with the history & features being preserved. The bridge over the river, built in 1777, provides a vital transport link. After being washed out in 1847 it was rebuilt and has expanded throughout centuries, most recently being widened in 1954 to accommodate modern vehicles & support local industries. The bridge provides a focal point for celebrations in the community and a valuable connection between Blairgowrie and Rattray and is crossed by pupils every day. This tartan captures the natural colours of the river landscape and is intended to preserve the memories and history of the River Ericht.

Jute, Jam, Journalism

studio was commissioned by Overgate Shopping Centre to design a unique tartan as a commemorative tribute to the once famous Dundee Juteopolis, as part of a yearlong marketing campaign. The tartan is to be woven entirely out of jute with various colours throughout to represent the three Js of Dundee; Jute, Jam and Journalism. Natural jute, the main colour of the design represents the jute industry of Dundee and secondary colours of orange, red, black and grey represent jam, marmalade and the newsprint of journalism respectively.

OUR STORY.

Tartan Design: Breacan Caledonia - formally warpweftweave studio EST 2012. The studio designs bespoke hand-woven tartans for families, businesses and corporate clients. The hand-crafted tartans are woven on traditional hand-looms, weaving scarfs and stoles. The studio also designs and sources the manufacture of tartan in various weights for clients. The studio's primary focus is now the three T's - tartan, tweed & tuition. The studio is always committed in every design aspect, and every client is as unique as every hand-woven piece of cloth woven in my studio in rural Perthshire, Scotland. Due to the bespoke nature of Ashleigh’s work he can make scarves, wraps, small lap blankets & cushions to order. Ashleigh designs all the hand-woven tartan setts to become mill-woven if required, and the studio continues to weave the hand-woven tartans to date in the studio. Ashleigh also offers a unique service where he takes looms into workshops; so far, these workshops have been successfully run at schools and working with care homes and day centres to create a unique experience helping older people with dementia.

Where Now: Ashleigh gratudated as a socially engaged crafts practitioner in 2020. At present, Ashleigh is developing his practice in the socially engaged arts. This is just part of his skill set. He is a trained Masterweaver and graduated with a 2.1 BDes Hons from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) in 2012. Since then, Ashleigh has run numerous projects and has engaged with the community on multiple projects, some of which are still ongoing. Ashleigh has a range of various skills, to help you design and create dynamic weaving workshops. When not in the studio, he can often be found in and around Perthshire in various workshops, sometimes assisted by his weaving assistant. Together, they can run day workshops or get involved with regular activities to help you establish your own textile journeys, from tartans to tweeds. Weaving is an excellent therapeutic benefit and can be applied to many areas. Ashleigh and his team have taken loom into care homes and worked with clients to create tartans for a day-centres. Some project only requires a day’s interventions, or we can facilitate large ongoing projects when needed.
